Apple Reportedly Weighs a Server Comeback, Possibly With Nvidia
Apple is reportedly preparing to re-enter the server hardware business, a market it abandoned more than a decade ago. According to a report from The Information, the company may also work with Nvidia on the effort. A server product might not appear until 2029, and the plans remain subject to change.
Why Apple Is Looking at Servers Again

The driving force appears to be the growing demand for AI compute. Apple’s ARM-based M-series chips have earned a reputation for combining performance with power efficiency, and that combination has made the company‘s existing desktop machines attractive to AI developers. The Mac Mini and Mac Studio, in particular, have become popular choices in that community. That popularity has been strong enough to cause shortages of those models.
The demand signal is clear: developers want Apple silicon for AI workloads. A dedicated server line would let Apple address that interest more directly, rather than relying on desktop hardware repurposed for server tasks.
A Long Absence From Enterprise Hardware

Apple has not offered a server since it retired the Xserve line in 2011. For the years since, the company has left enterprise machines to other vendors. A return would mark a significant shift in strategy, though it would not be entirely without precedent. Apple’s current M-series processors already power the Macs that some AI developers are using in server-like roles.
Whether a new server would carry the Xserve name is not known. The report does not confirm a product name, and Apple has not announced any server plans publicly.
Possible Timeline and Chip Details

The server product may not debut until 2029, according to the report. If that timeline holds, the machines could use two or four M8 Ultra chips, depending on the model. That would place the hardware well beyond Apple’s current chip roadmap.
Apple announced its M6 chip in August. The M8 line is still far off, which underscores how early the server plans are. The report describes a product that is still years away, and the details could change before any launch.
Nvidia Collaboration and NVLink Fusion
The report suggests Apple may partner with Nvidia on the server effort. One possibility is that the servers could use Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion technology. NVLink Fusion is designed to connect multiple chips so they can act as a single system, a capability that matters for demanding AI workloads.
Apple and Nvidia have historically had a frosty relationship. But there are signs of a thaw. Apple recently used Nvidia chips for revamped Siri servers. If Apple were to incorporate NVLink Fusion into future server products, that could lead to more collaboration between the two companies.
None of the partnership details have been confirmed. The Information’s report describes Apple’s plans as reported, not announced, and the Nvidia angle remains a rumor at this stage.
What Remains Unclear
Apple has not commented on the report. The company has not confirmed that it is building servers, that it will work with Nvidia, or that any product will arrive in 2029. The chip specifications, including the use of two or four M8 Ultra processors, are also unconfirmed.
For now, the story rests on reporting from The Information and on the broader context of AI compute demand. Apple’s M-series chips have already found a following among AI developers, and the Mac Mini and Mac Studio shortages show that interest is real. Whether that translates into a full server product line is a question that will not be answered for years.
