The summer transfer window in the Premier League closed with a flurry of activity, as clubs continued their heavy spending right up to the 11 PM deadline on Tuesday. This period has seen unprecedented financial outlay, with several major deals completed in the final hours.
Manchester City Lead the Spending Charts
Manchester City emerged as the biggest spenders, concluding their business by signing Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for an estimated £125 million, equaling the British transfer record. The club, known as the Sky Blues, also secured Senegalese winger Elymane Ndiaye from Everton for around £65 million.
Premier League Clubs Exceed £3 Billion Mark
For the first time, Premier League clubs have surpassed the £3 billion spending barrier in a single transfer window. This marks a significant increase from just five years ago, when total spending stood at £1.13 billion. The current window has seen four deals exceeding £100 million, placing them among the top 11 most expensive transfers in Premier League history.
Other Major Transfers Over £100 Million
In addition to Fernandez, three other transfers crossed the £100 million threshold. Manchester City signed midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million, while Morgan Rogers moved from Aston Villa to Chelsea for £117 million. Liverpool paid a base fee of £107 million for French striker Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, with the deal potentially rising to £123 million.
Tottenham Hotspur also broke their club record by signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal that could reach £100 million.
Notable Deals and Spending Patterns
Aston Villa announced their eleventh signing of the summer, bringing in Senegalese winger Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain for £47 million. Newcastle United paid £51.4 million for striker Matias Fernandez Pardo from French club Lille.
Domestic spending among Premier League clubs has also increased, with approximately 38% of deals conducted between clubs within the league, compared to 30% last summer.
Top Three Biggest Spenders
The three clubs with the highest expenditure were:
- Manchester City: Topped the list with total spending of £458 million, as new manager Enzo Maresca worked to build his first squad.
- Chelsea: Spent generously, with transfers totaling £349 million to support new manager Xabi Alonso.
- Tottenham: Invested £303 million in new players as part of a rebuilding process after two consecutive seasons of narrowly avoiding relegation.
Promoted Clubs and Other Moves
According to Transfermarkt, newly promoted clubs Ipswich Town, Coventry City, and Hull City collectively spent over £400 million in preparation for the Premier League season. Sunderland also secured the signing of promising Belgian winger Malick Fofana (21) from French club Olympique Lyonnais for approximately £30 million, beating Crystal Palace in the race for the player.
Failed Deals on Deadline Day
Not all attempts were successful on the final day of the transfer window. British media reported that the move of American striker Folarin Balogun to Everton collapsed after he pulled out of the deal. Additionally, Senegalese midfielder Lamine Camara remained at Monaco after his transfer to Chelsea fell through, a deal that had been valued at around £47.1 million.
