Sen. John Fetterman wants to make one thing clear: he is not becoming a Republican. The Pennsylvania Democrat addressed the long-simmering speculation directly on Tuesday at the Capitol, raising his voice and shaking his head as he told reporters the idea was off the table.
“I will not be a Republican,” Fetterman said, according to NBC News. He added that switching parties would make him a liar, and he pointed out that his name is not on any ballot right now. He also stressed that he has always been a Democrat.
His frustration was visible. Fetterman said he gets asked about a party switch constantly, and the repeated questions have clearly worn on him. The exchange was brief but emphatic, leaving little doubt about his current intentions.
How the Speculation Started
The rumors began in mid-July, when Fetterman hinted that he might leave the Democratic Party. He conditioned any departure on the party platform becoming anti-Israel. Days later, he publicly wondered whether Democrats even wanted him in their ranks.
That initial flirtation with the idea was enough to set off a wave of speculation that has persisted for months. It intensified last week when Fetterman appeared in a video at the Republican convention in Dallas, where he introduced Republican Sen. David McCormick, his Pennsylvania colleague.
Shortly after that appearance, Fetterman tried to calm the waters by saying he would not switch parties if Democrats captured Senate control in November. But the questions did not stop. On Tuesday, he tried again to put the matter to rest.
Schumer’s Support and Fetterman’s Distance
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has publicly backed Fetterman, calling him a very good member of Congress and saying Democrats respect him. That support, however, has not silenced the chatter about Fetterman’s growing distance from his own party.
The main driver of that distance is Fetterman’s defense of Israel and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. That stance sets him apart from many in the Democratic base and has made him a frequent guest on Fox News, where he often criticizes left-wing Democrats.
His willingness to appear on Fox News and take on his own party’s left flank has fueled the perception that he might be more comfortable in the GOP. But Fetterman insists that is not the case.
Polling Numbers Tell a Complicated Story
Fetterman’s approval among Democrats has dropped sharply. A Siena poll last month found just 22% of Democrats approve of his job performance, down from 74% in May 2024. At the same time, his approval among Pennsylvania Republicans is rising.
That dynamic has led some to wonder whether Fetterman could win a Republican primary. But that path may be even more remote than a Democratic renomination, which is already fading. To win a GOP primary, Fetterman would have to defend liberal positions on health care, the minimum wage, LGBTQ rights and abortion—stances that would be difficult to square with Republican primary voters.
His seat is up for re-election in 2028, and he was first elected in 2022. For now, he remains a Democrat, but the questions about his future are unlikely to disappear entirely.
Media Reports and Pushback
Recent media reports have raised questions about Fetterman’s performance in the Senate. A Wall Street Journal report detailed a lack of interest in the job, citing interviews with former staffers and lawmakers. Fetterman declined to comment on that report, and neither he nor his office commented for the story.
He did, however, call the report smears in a statement to CNN. He also ignored questions about an X account run by former staffers.
McCormick came to Fetterman’s defense on X, criticizing disloyal staff and left-wing forces. He described Fetterman as an independent thinker. That defense from a Republican colleague only added to the intrigue surrounding Fetterman’s political identity.
What Comes Next
For now, Fetterman is staying put. But the combination of his Israel stance, his Fox News appearances, his declining Democratic approval and his rising Republican approval ensures that the speculation will not die easily. Every time he steps before a camera, the question will likely come up again.
On Tuesday, Fetterman made his answer as clear as he could. Whether that ends the speculation remains to be seen.
