Jose Mourinho, the Real Madrid coach, expressed frustration with his team’s performance in their 1-0 loss to Real Betis on Friday evening at La Cartuja, a result that marked their fourth La Liga fixture of the season. The Portuguese manager did not hold back in his post-match press conference, accusing his players of being too honest and lacking the cunning displayed by their opponents.
Mourinho's 'Naivety' Comment
Mourinho stated, “Betis players are more intelligent in this sense than Real Madrid players; Real Madrid players are pure and naive. In the first play of the match, there was a clear yellow card on a player who hit Valverde. And a minute later, another yellow card for a player who committed an important foul on Vinicius.”
He continued, “But Real Madrid players get up immediately, while Betis players are smarter, and of course with the support of a great crowd that pushes and presses, they achieve this kind of thing.”
Clarifying His Words
Later in the press conference, a journalist asked Mourinho about his use of the word “naive,” noting that in Spanish it could be translated as “simple” or “innocent.” The journalist inquired whether he believed he could instill more experience and competitiveness in his squad.
Mourinho responded, “No… maybe I explained myself poorly. The team worked very hard, and I have nothing to blame any player for; they gave everything. By naive or innocent, I mean there are specific clear situations, like simple yellow cards; for example, the stamp on the foot… it’s a clear case that warrants a yellow card.”
He elaborated, “In the first minute, there was a stamp on Fede Valverde’s foot, and he stayed on his feet… That is something to be proud of as a Real Madrid leader, and I applaud him for it. But to give you an example from the other side: that lad (a Betis player) who was lying down, looking as if he had died in front of our bench… I thought the medics would come to take him away, but in the end, there was no need for an ambulance!”
The Portuguese coach concluded, “In that sense, I tell you. When you play matches against teams that have this kind of culture and mentality, it works against you.”
