The news cycle can be overwhelming, so The Free Press is offering a different kind of escape: an afternoon of live stand-up comedy in New York City. Introducing Free Press Sundays at the Comedy Cellar, a new series that brings the Free Press community together for performances by comedians who aren’t afraid to say the wrong thing out loud.
These shows are designed to be intimate and a little unpredictable, tailored for the Free Press audience. That means two things: they’re going to be very good, and they’re going to sell out fast.
What to Expect at Free Press Sundays
Each show is emceed by Judy Gold, a favorite among Free Press readers. Gold will keep the energy up and, as the announcement warns, will probably offend at least a few people—so come prepared. The lineup will change with every event, but the mission remains constant: smart comedians, no sacred cows, and a room full of people who can take a joke.
April 19 Lineup
The first show, scheduled for April 19, features a mix of established and rising comics:

Ticket Information and Presale Dates
Tickets go on sale in two waves. Paid subscribers get first access starting Monday, March 30, at noon ET. The general public can purchase tickets starting Wednesday, April 1, at noon ET.
If you can’t make the April show, mark your calendar for Sunday, May 17. Tickets for that event drop on April 20, with paid subscribers again receiving early access.

The event runs from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., with doors opening at 3:30 p.m. Arrive early to snag the best seats. The venue is the Comedy Cellar’s Village Underground location.
Note that there is a two-item minimum purchase per person—whether it’s a drink, a snack, or something else—as this is how comedy clubs stay in business.
More Than Just Comedy: A Free Press Meetup
Because this is The Free Press, the show isn’t the whole experience. After the performance, attendees are invited to a nearby spot for a Free Press meetup, featuring drinks, conversation, and the increasingly rare chance to talk with strangers who are curious, engaged, and not glued to their phones. The location will not be shared until the show for security reasons.
