Real Madrid star Marco Asensio has been convicted of a traffic safety crime after being caught driving under the influence of alcohol, according to Spanish newspaper Atlántico Hoy. The player accepted the verdict, resulting in a fine of €14,400 and an eight-month suspension of his driving license.
Alcohol Level Nearly Four Times the Legal Limit
The newspaper reported that tests showed Asensio’s blood alcohol concentration was approximately four times the maximum permitted level. His reading exceeded 0.60 mg/l, a threshold that, under Spanish law, elevates the offense from an administrative violation to a criminal offense.
The conviction was handed down by a court in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, where Asensio accepted the judgment without contesting the charges.
Separate Court Case Involving Asensio and Former Players
Asensio’s drunk driving conviction coincides with his appearance, starting Thursday and lasting three days, before a court in Las Palmas. He is standing trial alongside three former players: Fran Ruiz, Juan Rodríguez, and Andrés García. This separate case involves allegations of disclosing secrets, violating privacy, and distributing pornographic material involving minors.
The public prosecutor is seeking a prison sentence of two years, six months, and one day, in addition to a financial penalty. According to the report, Asensio is not accused of participating in the acts or recording the material, but rather of distributing the images. The prosecution has indicated it is willing to drop the charges if Asensio apologizes to the victims during the trial.
