The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has officially extended the contract of Hossam Hassan as head coach of the national team until 2030. The announcement follows a friendly meeting where the renewal was formalized, as confirmed in an EFA statement.
Contract Extension Details
The EFA’s board had already approved the extension in July, and a committee was formed to review the new contract’s terms, duration, and personal clauses. The statement noted that the decision was made in accordance with the board’s earlier approval.
Hassan, 60, had previously revealed that he and his brother Ibrahim Hassan, the team’s manager, had been working without a contract since February 2026. The new deal now secures his position for the long term.
Historic World Cup Campaign
Under Hassan’s leadership, Egypt achieved a historic milestone by recording their first-ever World Cup victory, defeating New Zealand in the group stage. They then narrowly lost 3-2 to Argentina in the Round of 16, a match where Egypt led 2-0 until 11 minutes from time before conceding three goals.
Egypt’s journey included a dramatic penalty shootout win over Australia in the Round of 32, marking their first knockout-stage match in World Cup history. The team also drew with Belgium and Iran in the group stage, advancing to the knockout rounds for the first time.
Qualification and Legacy
Hassan took charge in February 2024 and guided Egypt to the 2026 World Cup, their first appearance in eight years. He became the first Egyptian to participate in the World Cup as both a player and a coach. Additionally, he led the team to the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
