IBD Elite 2026: The Fastest-Growing Independent Brokerages

Rising asset values, merger and acquisition activity, and advisor recruiting and retention efforts helped boost top-line revenue by at least 15% last year at the 10 independent brokerages that achieved the fastest expansion in Financial Planning’s IBD Elite study of the independent brokerage channel in wealth management.

However, these firms—ranging from industry giants like LPL Financial, Cambridge Investment Research, and Northwestern Mutual to midsize players such as Arkadios Capital, Prospera Financial Services, IFP, and Arete Wealth—face threats to their continued growth. Experts have warned for years that dwindling organic growth across the industry signals potential difficulties ahead for firms that have relied on market appreciation to drive their numbers.

Market Appreciation as a Key Driver

Higher asset values are “probably the number one thing” fueling the industry’s flourishing revenue figures, according to Mike Byrnes, founder of advisory practice growth strategy firm Byrnes Consulting. He noted that firms often secure more customer referrals from “happy clients when the market’s going up.”

For LPL, the fastest-growing firm and the No. 1 overall firm on the IBD Elite, major acquisitions like Commonwealth Financial Network and recruiting wins such as Prudential Advisors also contribute significantly to those numbers.

Preparing for Market Downturns

Byrnes emphasized that firms investing in marketing efforts—such as social media videos that allow viewers to “build up a virtual relationship with you”—can insulate themselves from down-cycle risks. “They’ll be in a better place, too, to do well when the market does turn,” he said. “Hey, congratulations, you’ve done really well, but just be ready that that’s not going to go on forever.”

Some advisors have already prepared their firms for such challenges. For example, Omaha, Nebraska-based registered investment advisory firm Stevens Capital Partners more than tripled its size in just three years, reaching $800 million in client assets and acquiring a tax firm earlier this month. According to founder David Stevens, client surveys, centers of influence, and asking for referrals early in customer relationships all support the firm’s organic growth.

“We pride ourselves on having nine different growth strategies at the firm,” Stevens said, noting that service differentiation in the initial phases of a relationship can generate more recommendations right away than some advisors might expect. “Most referrals come in the very first month while they’re wowed. … Most people think, ‘Don’t ask until you’ve earned the right.'”

Opportunities in a Downturn

A future market downturn could also bring opportunities, Byrnes suggested. Self-directed investors might seek advice about their losses, or falling values could prompt some clients to drop their current advisors. Large firms may present their scale as a value driver to prospective clients, while smaller firms can offer a family-owned business taking on the giants as a counterpoint.

“I think that’s part of the branding message,” Byrnes said. “That mentality really resonates with people, like they’re going to feel like they’re taken care of better by small firms, in some cases.”

Ranking Methodology

The companies in the ranking are ordered by the percentage increase in their annual revenue between 2025 and the prior year, as reported by the companies themselves. Financial Planning relies on each firm to state their annual metrics accurately.
