Apple Builds a New Operating System for a Home Hub That Watches You Back

Apple is assembling a new operating system for a smart home hub, a device that would sit in the home and respond to the people around it. The work was reported by Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, and it describes a platform that stitches together elements of tvOS, watchOS and iOS rather than extending any one of them.

The project would give Apple a fresh entry in its line of operating systems. If the name suggested by trademark activity holds, it would be called homeOS and would stand alongside iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS and visionOS. That list has grown steadily over the years, and a home-focused system would mark another distinct environment for Apple software.

A screen that changes as you move

The hub itself is described as combining a HomePod-like speaker with a square display measuring 6 or 7 inches. On that screen, the interface is said to use a grid of app icons, widgets and customizable clock faces. The layout is not static: interface elements are expected to resize as a user approaches or leaves the display, so the screen can shift between a distant, glanceable view and a closer, more detailed one.

Facial recognition is built into the device, according to Gurman, and it is meant to identify who is looking at the display. Once the hub recognizes a person, it can show personalized information. That capability pairs with multi-user support on the platform, allowing more than one household member to have a distinct experience.

Siri AI at the center

Siri AI is expected to sit at the core of the new operating system. The assistant would be the primary way people interact with the hub, tying together the device’s apps, its speaker and its display. Apple has been rumored for a long time to be working on a smart home hub, and a Siri-centered interface would make the assistant the connective tissue for the product.

The rumored feature set reaches across several parts of Apple’s ecosystem. It includes FaceTime, HomeKit management, home security, photos, calendar and music. Preinstalled apps on the hub are said to include Calendar, Camera, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Apple News, Reminders, Notes and a Siri app. Those apps suggest a device meant for both household utility and media playback, with the Camera app potentially tied to security and the Siri app offering a dedicated space for the assistant.

Where the name comes from

The homeOS name is not confirmed by Apple. It is suggested by trademark activity from a shell company that may be linked to the company. Gurman reported that activity, and it has led to speculation that homeOS is the intended brand for the software. Apple has not announced the operating system or the hub.

If Apple unveils the device as soon as October this year, as Gurman expects, the hub would arrive with a name and a feature set that have so far been described only through reporting. The timeline places the announcement in the fall, though Apple has not confirmed any date.

What the hub would mean for Apple's home strategy

A home hub with its own operating system would give Apple a central device for the home, one that could manage HomeKit accessories, handle home security and provide FaceTime and media in a single place. The combination of a speaker and a square display echoes the HomePod line while adding a visual interface that the current HomePod does not have.

The facial recognition and multi-user support point to a device that adapts to whoever is in the room. Personalized information on the display could include calendar entries, reminders and other data tied to the recognized user. The resizing interface would make the hub usable from across a room or up close, a design choice that fits a device meant to be always present rather than held.

Apple’s operating system lineup has expanded as its hardware has diversified. A homeOS would be the first system built specifically for a stationary home device with a display and a speaker. The reported mix of tvOS, watchOS and iOS suggests Apple is drawing on interface ideas from the television, the wrist and the phone rather than starting from a blank slate.

The hub remains a rumor until Apple says otherwise. Gurman’s reporting in Power On has described the operating system, the hardware and the expected timing, but the company has not commented on the product. For now, the details point to a device that would bring Siri AI, facial recognition and a broad set of Apple apps into a single home-focused system.
