Apple TV to Deploy iPhone 18 Pro Cameras for Dodgers-Giants Broadcast

When the Los Angeles Dodgers host the San Francisco Giants on Friday, September 18, viewers tuning in to Apple TV’s Friday Night Baseball will see the game through a different kind of lens. Apple has confirmed that more than a dozen iPhone 18 Pro devices will be positioned throughout Dodger Stadium to capture live action from multiple vantage points, marking a significant expansion of its experiment with smartphone-based sports production.

A Dozen iPhones Across the Ballpark

The deployment involves more than twelve units of the newly released iPhone 18 Pro, each placed to gather footage that supplements the primary broadcast feed. According to Apple, the devices will record not only gameplay but also batting practice, player introductions, dugout reactions, and the broader stadium atmosphere. The result is intended to give viewers a more textured look at the event, mixing traditional coverage with angles that are harder to achieve using standard broadcast equipment.

Apple has stated that the iPhone’s compact size allows it to access perspectives that are difficult for traditional broadcast cameras to reach. That small footprint is central to the company’s pitch: by scattering iPhones around the venue, the production can capture intimate moments and unusual sightlines without the bulk of conventional rigs.

Building on Last Year's Fenway Park Test

This is not Apple’s first attempt at integrating iPhones into a live MLB broadcast. Last year, the company placed four iPhone 17 Pro devices at Fenway Park in Boston for a game between the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers. That trial demonstrated the technical feasibility of using consumer-grade hardware in a professional sports setting, and it produced at least one lasting artifact: a single iPhone 17 Pro from that broadcast was later inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

The Hall of Fame induction underscored the novelty of the approach, turning a piece of broadcast equipment into a piece of baseball history. Now, with the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple is scaling up both the number of devices and the scope of their deployment, moving from a four-unit test to a full dozen-plus array at one of baseball’s most iconic venues.

What It Means for Friday Night Baseball

Friday Night Baseball is Apple TV’s weekly MLB doubleheader package, available to subscribers at no additional cost. The Dodgers-Giants matchup on September 18 will be part of that slate, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. Pacific Time at Dodger Stadium. For viewers, the broadcast represents a chance to see how the iPhone 18 Pro performs under the lights of a live professional game, capturing everything from the intensity of the batter’s box to the energy of the crowd.

Apple’s decision to expand its iPhone-based production comes as the company continues to push the boundaries of what its mobile devices can do in professional settings. While the primary broadcast will still rely on traditional cameras, the iPhone 18 Pro units will add a layer of coverage that aims to bring viewers closer to the action. Whether that translates into a noticeably different viewing experience remains to be seen, but the tech giant is clearly betting that the small footprint and versatility of its latest phone can complement the established tools of sports broadcasting.

For now, baseball fans can mark their calendars for September 18 and tune in to Apple TV to see the latest chapter in this ongoing experiment. With more than a dozen iPhones scattered around Dodger Stadium, the broadcast promises to offer a fresh perspective on a classic rivalry.
