Oxford Marks Constitution Week with Flags, Proclamation, and Classroom Outreach

Oxford, Mississippi is marking Constitution Week with a mix of civic ceremony, visible reminders, and classroom outreach, as the David Reese Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution leads local observances running from September 17 through September 23.

The week carries a fixed place on the national calendar, opening each year on September 17. That date reaches back to 1787, when 39 delegates to the Constitutional Convention put their names to the document at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. What they produced established the framework of the federal government and became the foundation on which American rights and freedoms rest.

A Proclamation at the Mayor's Office

In Oxford, the observance took a formal turn when Mayor Robyn Tannehill signed a proclamation designating September 17-23 as Constitution Week in the city. DAR Regent Claudia Gleason joined the mayor for the occasion, appearing with her for a marking the signing.

The proclamation is one piece of a broader local effort organized by the David Reese Chapter. The chapter has built its Constitution Week schedule around three public-facing activities: distributing educational materials to schools in the area, arranging a Constitution display at the local library, and putting up informational posters at spots around town.

Flags Over the Courthouse

Oxford’s observance also has a visual dimension tied to the Lafayette County Courthouse. Flags are flying at Lafayette Liberty Square around the courthouse, and their presence connects two observances rather than one. The Lafayette County Board of Supervisors approved the flag display to begin with the 25th commemoration of the September 11 attacks and to continue through Constitution Week.

That decision gives the flags a dual role. They serve as a remembrance of September 11, and they remain in place as the community turns its attention to the Constitution in the days that follow.

Why September 17 Matters

Constitution Week is observed nationwide, but its starting point is specific: the anniversary of the signing in Philadelphia. The delegates who signed on September 17, 1787, did not produce a finished set of laws for daily life. They produced a structure — a framework for federal government — and in doing so laid the basis for the rights and liberties Americans claim today.

The local calendar mirrors that national rhythm. September 11 opens the period of flag display. September 17 brings the start of Constitution Week. The week runs through September 23, and the courthouse flags remain up throughout.

Materials for Schools, a Display for the Library

The David Reese Chapter’s outreach is aimed at reaching residents in different settings. Educational materials are going to area schools, giving students a direct connection to the week’s subject. At the local library, a Constitution display offers another point of contact for the public. Informational posters placed around town extend the message further, catching the attention of people who may not encounter the library display or the classroom materials.

Taken together, the proclamation, the flags, the school materials, the library display, and the town posters form Oxford’s local expression of a national observance — one that asks residents to consider the document’s spirit and meaning, and the role it continues to play as the foundation for American liberties, freedoms, and inalienable rights.
